Barite Mines of Cheshire

The 19th Century Barite Mining and Milling Industries of Cheshire and New Haven, Connecticut

This is a reprint of The Barite Mines of Cheshire, originally published by the Cheshire Historical Society in 1962. It is kept in circulation because of the importance of these mines to the local history and to U.S. mining history. The Jinny Hill Barite Mine, which operated from 1838 to 1877, is reported to be the first barite mine in the United States. The barite mines of Cheshire also supplied barite for paint manufacturers in New York.

This reprint is a cooperative effort of the Connecticut Geological & Natural History Survey and the Cheshire Historical Society.
